    This super telephoto zoom from Nikon costs around £1168 and has a Vibration Reduction system that should allow hand-held shots to be taken at shutter speeds thee stops lower than without. The lens is an older design, and such doesn't have a motor built-in. This means owners of Nikon's entry-level DSLRs, such as the Nikon D40, D60, D3000 and D5000 will only be able to focus this lens manually. Lees Meer Translate to Nederlands

    For the price, Nikon should do better and this lens is probably due for an upgrade. The performance at the long end is disappointing to say the least and the vibration reduction has long since been superseded. Despite this, the lens is a capable performer at shorter focal lengths and the VR does work well with static subjects. Lees Meer Translate to Nederlands

    The Nikkor AF 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR is a decent performer but it also comes with a few glitches. Optically the lens shows a very good but not exceptional resolution characteristic except at 400mm at wide-open aperture where the borders could be a little better. Vignetting is basically non-existing on an APS-C DSLR and the level of distortions is quite low. Lees Meer Translate to Nederlands

    Just got this lens in the mail yesterday. Only had enough time to mess with it for a second so far. The lens is very heavy so be ready to carry it. The auto focus will not work with the d60 model and a few others, a little disapointed. Will have to use manual mode which is a little hard holding up the weight and moving the focus ring.     Pros: I found the lens responsive, the photos sharp and the ability to take photos in relatively low light settings excellent. The VR allowed me to shoot birds without a tripod, which surprised me. Cons: It's a bit heavy and large, but that's to be expected. All in all, I'm pleased with this lens. I wonder if some of the criticism I've read is due more to the camera body that is attached to the lens, rather than the lens itself. Lees Meer Translate to Nederlands

    Heb deze lens 4 weken mogen lenen/testen van een collega die op vakantie ging. Ik twijfelde tussen de 70-300 en de 80-400. Je praat toch over een verschil van 800 Euro voor 100mm extra. Na veel wikken en wegen uiteindelijk toch de 70-300 gekocht. Lees Meer

    The lens focuses slowly, but does achieve a sharpness when stopped down to f/8 that matches my 16-85. Excellent long zoom, VR works well. Sharp photos with careful focusing. It does seem to run the camera battery down faster than the 16-85. It's heavy, too. Wish i had bought this instead of the 70 300 VR. I will need to find a someone to take it off my hands. There is no comparison, really. With regard to the 70-300 VR I am surprised the 80-400 is that much better. Lees Meer Translate to Nederlands

    Ich hatte das Nikkor 80-400mm ein halbes Jahr lang, weil ich von Olympus kommend mehr Tele haben wollte. Die Abbildungsqualität ist nicht so schlecht, aber der AF ist einfach extrem langsam! Da die anderen Teles bei Nikon extrem teuer sind, mir die diversen Sigmas xx-500mm von der Verarbeitung und auch von der Bildqualität nicht gefallen haben, behelfe ich mit aktuell mit einem TC 20 III zu meinen 70-200mm VRI.
